The Middlesex High School wrestling team is growing by leaps and bounds and will open its regular season on Monday, December 1, on the road against King William and Northumberland.
MHS coach Lee Anderson said 30 student-athletes have signed up to wrestle this year. “We are a very young team, but we have kids who are working very hard,” he said. “It’s a good feeling to see all these kids out.”
Middlesex had a strong team last year as the Chargers finished second in the Tidewater District and ninth among 13 teams in the Region A tournament. Returning from that team are Craig Conley, Cameron Wines, Alex Pratt, Ean Reed and Chris Mason.
Wines and Conrad Maszack qualified and participated at the State Group A Tournament in Salem last year. The Chargers lost Maszack to graduation, but Wines will be returning and is expected to be one of the top wrestlers in Region A.
Others on the team are Thomas Norman, Brandon Jessup, Austin Bushong, John Shaw, Carlos Gonzales, Zack O’Bryan, Darrien Fisher, Nathan Wood, Corey Keeling, Jay Bryant, Brian Insley, Reese Harris, Manuel Balderas, Zack Belcher, Angel Vargas, Tyler Seay, Schuyler Sibley, Joe Nelson, Tyler Horsley, Tyler Stanley, Barren Lawson, Damian Key, Brandon Kearney, Luciano Catanzaro, Linwood Cannon, Ashlie Henshaw, Evan Lefever, Dylan Kellar and Diego Reyes.
The Chargers will do some traveling after their home meet on Dec. 1. MHS will travel to Amelia on Wednesday, Dec. 10, to participate in a tri-meet; to Peninsula Catholic in Newport News on Wednesday, Dec. 17; to Lancaster on Saturday, Dec. 20; and back to Peninsula Catholic for a night tournament on Saturday, January 10.
Middlesex will host Essex, Sussex and King William on Wednesday, January 14, in its first home match at 6 p.m..
