Middlesex sweeps district track titles

The Middlesex High School (MHS) boys and girls track teams each won Tidewater District titles at West Point High School on Thursday, May 10, and Tuesday, May 15. Due to severe thunderstorms the May 10 meet was continued on May 15.

The MHS boys won their district title with 165 points. The MHS girls won their district title with 155.5 points

The King William boys were second with 103 points and the West Point girls were second with 135 points.

The Lady Chargers were paced by seniors Tiarah Hayes and Michaela Chowning. Hayes was a triple winner. She captured the 100 meters (13.04), long jump (16.00.5) and triple jump (31’11.5”). Chowning was a double winner with wins in the high jump (4’10”) and 400 meters (1:03.71).

The only other first place winner for the Lady Chargers was Katherine Campbell in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (51.56). Campbell won the race in a photo finish against Mathews hurdling star Rileigh Betz (51.57).

This year the top four individual places automatically qualify for regional competition and top two teams qualify in the relays.

Middlesex’s Sydney Hudson finished fourth, high jump (4’4”); Sarah Baker, 800 meters, second (2:43.47); Campbell, long jump, third (14’9.5”), and triple jump, fourth (30’1.5”); Chloe Hodges, triple jump, third (30’2”); Lane Anderson, shot put, second (31’11.5”), and discus, fourth (74’); Hayes, 200 meters, second (26.96), and Autumn Ortman, discus, second (90’6”).

The girls had two relay teams qualify for regionals with second place finishes in 4x100 meter relay and 4x800 meter relay. Members of the 4x100 team are Chowning, Hayes, Hodges and Campbell. Members of the 4x800 meter team are MaKenzie Bristow, Baker, Hannah Cannon and Macie Daniel.

Middlesex boys
The Charger boys were paced by double winner Raquan Marshall in the long jump (21’3”), and triple jump (42’11”). Other winners were Demetre South, 110-meter high hurdles (15.52); Manny Fernandez, 300-meter intermediate hurdles (41.06); and Will Howard, 3200 meters (11:35.1).

Others to qualify for regionals were Tyler Radabaugh, 3200 meters, fourth (12:25); Stefan Coleman, 800 meters, second (2:13.71); South, triple jump, second (42’2”), and long jump, third (19’2”); Clayton Ellis, 800 meters, fourth (2:15.04); and Deandre Jessie, high jump, second (5’10”).
The Chargers 4 x 800 meter relay team was second (9:30.27). Team members are Carlos Marshall, Ellis, Coleman and Neaven Johannsen.

The Middlesex girls and boys track teams will travel to West Point on Thursday, May 17, to take on Lancaster, Essex, King William and Rappahannock high schools.
