Middlesex Junior All-Stars finish third

The Middlesex Junior Little League All-Star baseball team (ages 13-14) finished in third place in the District 15 Tournament held in Essex and Richmond County. 

Eventual District 15 champion Essex sent Middlesex to the loser’s bracket in the opening round with an 8-5 win. Middlesex then reeled off three straight wins before losing 13-1 to King William in the double-elimination event.

Essex advances to the Junior Little League State Tournament that will start on Friday, July 24, at the Middlesex Sports Complex at Locust Hill. Essex will play the District 3 champions on at 6 p.m.

The champions of the state’s 16 districts will participate in the tournament, which is being hosted by the Middlesex Little League.

The state championship game is set for Wednesday, July 29, at 10 a.m.

Essex 8 / Middlesex 5

Middlesex lost to Essex 8-5 in the first round of the tournament on July 7. Middlesex led 3-2 after the first inning, but Essex put 4 runs on the board in the third inning and a run in each of the fourth and sixth innings.

For Middlesex, Andrew Dozier had a double; Jeremy Collier, double; Chris Chewning, double; Austin Cooper, double; Kyle Lawson, single, Trey Major, bunt; and Calvin Rhodes, walk.

Pitchers were Chris Chewning, 4 innings; Kyle Shelton 1 inning; and Kyle Lawson 1 inning.

Middlesex 9 / Mathews 6

Middlesex trailed 6-3 after three innings but had a 6-run rally in the fourth inning to defeat Mathews 9-6 on July 8.

For Middlesex, Chris Chewning had a home run; Hunter Davis, 2 doubles; Andrew Dozier, 2 doubles; Jeremy Collier, double, single; Zach Belcher, 2 singles; Austin Cooper, 2 walks; and Kyle Shelton, walk. 

Jeremy Collier pitched 4 innings and Kyle Shelton pitched 3 innings for Middlesex.

Middlesex 8 / Northumberland 1

Kyle Shelton pitched a complete game for Middlesex in the 8-1 win on July 9.

For Middlesex, Austin Cooper had 2 doubles and a single; Kyle Shelton, double, single; Jeremy Collier, double; Wes Moody, single; Calvin Rhodes, single; Trey Major, single; Chris Chewning, single; Hunter Davis, walk, hit by a pitch; Ben Eanes, bunt; Zach Belcher, 2 walks; Kyle Lawson, walk; and Andrew Dozier, walk.

Middlesex 8 / Richmond 6

On July 10 it was a nip-and-tuck game early for Middlesex and Richmond County. After three innings, Middlesex led 6-4 and hung on for an 8-6 win.

For Middlesex, Andrew Dozier had 2 singles; Zach Belcher, double; Jeremy Collier, double; Austin Cooper, single, hit by a pitch; Ben Eanes, single; and Chris Chewning, single.

Chris Chewning pitched 5 1/3 innings and Kyle Lawson pitched 1 2/3 innings.

King William 13 / Middlesex 1

King William overpowered Middlesex 13-1 on July 11, and went on to finish second to Essex in the tournament.

For Middlesex, Andrew Dozier had 2 singles; Calvin Rhodes, double; Wes Moody, double; Austin Cooper, single, hit by a pitch; Hunter Davis, single; Zach Belcher, single. 

Pitchers were Trey Major, Ben Eanes, Hunter Davis and Austin Cooper.
