Middlesex High junior varsity baseball action

by Larry S. Chowning

Kevin Walsh and Morgan Thomas combined pitching talents to post a no-hitter in a 15-0 romp over the Northumberland Indians in Middlesex High School junior varsity action on March 24.

The game was called after four innings.

“The guys did a great job today,” said MHS head coach Jonathan Norris. “We didn’t chase many bad pitches and we worked the count into our favor. Kevin and Morgan did a great job on the mound. They got ahead of the count and worked off that.”

Thomas and K. Walsh also paced the Chargers at the plate. Thomas had three hits, one run and three RBIs. K. Walsh had two hits, one run and two RBIs.

Drew Pitts contributed two hits, two runs and one RBI; Shane Bristow singled and drove in two runs; Stone Shores and Austin Bushong each had a hit and an RBI; John Walsh scored and had an RBI; and Chris Chewning scored three runs and had three RBIs.

On March 27, Middlesex defeated Lancaster 8-1. Shane Bristow was the winning pitcher. He pitched four innings, gave up four hits, one run, three walks and had nine strikeouts.

“The guys played very well considering the conditions,” said MHS Coach Norris.  “It rained from the second pitch of the game until the end.  Shane threw the ball very well. He located his fastball well on the corners. Kevin came in and did a great job in relief.”

K. Walsh connected for a double and single, scored a run and had two RBIs; J. Walsh had a single, a run and drove in a run; Chewning scored two runs; and Thomas, John Purcell, D. Pitts and Shores all scored runs.

On March 30, the JV Chargers defeated Lancaster 9-6. K. Walsh pitched four innings and gave up only one hit and had nine strikeouts in earning the win.

Thomas relieved Walsh and pitched three innings. He gave up four hits and had six strikeouts.

“We started off the first three innings playing very sloppy,” said Coach Norris. “We would get a few runs, and as soon as we went back on defense we would give them right back. The last four innings we got it together and played pretty well and were able to win the game. The guys hit the ball very well.”

Thomas had a single and a triple, two runs and an RBI; J. Walsh had two hits; Drew Pitts had two hits, a run and two RBIs; and J. Walsh had two runs and an RBI.

The JV Chargers will host Colonial Beach on Tuesday, April 7, at 5 p.m. at Deltaville Ballpark.
