Middlesex won its third straight game in the Senior Little League State Tournament Tuesday afternoon, 7-4 over Bristol.
Middlesex plays Grottoes at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, and must win to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament that is being held at Pound in southwestern Virginia.
The tournament started last week with 16 teams, and Middlesex is one of only four battling for the championship and a chance to advance to regional play.
Mechanicsville and Dumphries-Triangle-Quantico (DTQ) are the two undefeated teams remaining and they were playing each other Tuesday afternoon. Both Middlesex and Dumfries had one loss apiece.
To win the tournament, Middlesex has to beat Grottoes this evening, then defeat the Mechanicsville-DTQ loser, and then defeat the Mechanicsville-DTQ winner twice.
In Tuesday’s 7-4 win over Bristol, Middlesex collected 12 hits. Travis Myers had a double and two singles; Kevin Walsh and Morgan Thomas, two singles apiece; Mason Goodrich, Harley Moore and Cody Hunter, a double apiece; and Robbie Pitts and Shane Bristow, a single apiece.
Bristow started on the mound for Middlesex and pitched 3 2/3 innings with a strikeout. When Bristow left the mound, Middlesex led 5-2.
Kevin Walsh relieved and pitched the final 3 1/3 innings with one strikeout.
Bristol had defeated Middlesex 6-2 in the opening round of the tournament.
