The Middlesex High varsity soccer team began Conference 42 play with an exciting 5-3 win over Mathews High School in double overtime Monday evening.

The 2014 varsity Chargers are comprised of 11 newcomers and 8 returning players, including captains Eder Sosa, Hughes Nelson, Devante Robertson and Zebulon Burrell.

The Chargers displayed outstanding teamwork and hustle to come away victorious despite rainy conditions against the Blue Devils.

During regulation play, Burrell scored on an assist from sophomore Enrique Gonzales to give Middlesex a 1-0 lead.

Mathews retaliated with a goal on a free kick.

Gonzales put the Chargers ahead for a second time with a penalty shot. However, the Blue Devils tied the score 2-2 before the half.

Midway through the second half, the Chargers again took the lead as visiting foreign exchange student Miguel Rodriguez took advantage of a loose ball and put it in the back of the net. Mathews tied the game 3-3 on a cross from the right side of the field to force overtime.

The first overtime expired with the game still tied. During the second overtime, the Chargers came out ready to claim the victory. Burrell scored for a second time on an assist from Sosa for a 4-3 lead off an assist from Gonzalez. Charger freshman Wayne Taylor then netted a tremendous shot from outside the 18 yard line for a 5-3 lead and the victory.

“The win was truly an entire team effort with outstanding play by everyone, including veteran goalkeeper Zachary Halstead,” said Charger coach Rufus Ruark.

This victory comes after the varsity Chargers tallied 1 win, 4 losses and 1 tie in non-district play earlier in the month of April.
