MHS to take 7-0 record to Mathews
Middlesex got an easy 10-0 win over visiting King and Queen on May 13 to remain undefeated in the Tidewater District.
This Friday, May 21, at 7 p.m the Chargers (7-0, 10-5) have a showdown at Mathews, which will be looking to even the score in the final game of the regular season.
Mathews’ only district loss this season was at Middlesex, 14-4 on April 30. That game was close until the sixth inning when Middlesex scored 8 runs.
“We need to play better Friday against Mathews,” said coach Tim Blake. “We were just going through the motions at the plate against King and Queen and that will not work against Mathews.”
If Mathews and Middlesex tie for the regular season title, a playoff game will be held on Saturday, May 22 (time and site undetermined)..
Against King and Queen, Keith Whitley (1-1) pitched all 5 innings for Middlesex. He struck out 8, and gave up 2 hits and a walk. Alexander Crittenden was 2 for 3 with an RBI double and a 2-run home run. K. Whitley clocked an RBI triple. Brandon Putney, Harley Moore, Kevin Walsh and John Walsh each had a single to drive in a run. Mason Goodrich and Timmy Coker each singled.
The Middlesex JVs play Mathews at 5 p.m. before the varsity game in Friday’s doubleheader.
The Tidewater District Tournament semifinals are Tuesday, May 25, at 5 p.m. on the home field of the higher seed. The tourney title game is at 5 p.m. Friday, May 28, at Deltaville Ball Park.
