MHS Scholastic Bowl teams launch seasons
Last year the Middlesex High School Scholastic Bowl teams struggled in a district that placed two teams in the top five Group A teams in the state.
This year opened on a hopeful note, despite two early losses, said team coach Jim Hunt, who heads the MHS Science Department.
The first match on November 10 at West Point, which was state runner-up last season, was close through the first two rounds. The Chargers, led by Gregory Dorsey and Ashley McCarty, kept the match tight until West Point pulled away in the final round for a 170-75 victory.
The JV team, lead by Joey McComas and Rebecca Walker, gained a measure of revenge, leading wire-to-wire and winning 115-85.
The second match of the year was November 12 at Colonial Beach. The varsity squad fell behind early, but rallied strongly in the third round to make up nearly 60 points, but fell short 145-110. Dorsey and Mark Hall led the comeback.
The JV squad took an early lead on the strength of McComas, but faltered in the second round and was unable to pull ahead in the third round, falling 65-50.
The Middlesex varsity team defeated visiting King William on Monday 180-95. Building on their strong showing against Colonial Beach, the Chargers (1-2) jumped to an early lead, and finished strong for their first win of the year. Hall, Dorsey, McCarty and Melissa Baltrusaitis all contributed to the strong showing.
The JV squad returned to its winning ways and was led by McComas, Walker and Kelli Musick. It won the first two rounds and held on for a close, hard-fought 80-75 victory, and now has a 2-1 record.
The Chargers had one more match, at home against King and Queen on November 19 before breaking for Thanksgiving.
