MHS JV girls down Drifters

by Tom Chillemi

The Middlesex High junior varsity girls basketball team avenged an earlier one-point loss to Colonial Beach with a 37-30 win over the Lady Drifters on Monday at MHS.

Colonial Beach led 19-16 at the half, but MHS turned the table in the third quarter and went ahead 30-24. “We actually won the game in the third quarter,” said Middlesex JV coach Michael Lewis Sr. “Our press was more efficient in the third quarter and we got some key steals that led to easy baskets.”

Colonial Beach is the only district team to defeat Middlesex this season—34-33 on Jan. 5.

Anna Reed, Lara Lucas, Jasmine Fells, Nila Robinson and Bridgett Self were the catalysts for the JV Lady Chargers in the third quarter.

Middlesex (5-1, 11-2) lost A. Reed and Lucas to fouls early in the fourth quarter, but reserves Beth Guill, Heather Blankenship, Jocelyn Brown, Chelsi Blake and Kendra Reed contributed some valuable minutes off the bench.

Fells led Middlesex in scoring with 12 points, Lucas had 9, A. Reed 6, Robinson 4, Blake 4, and Brown and Self 1 apiece.

On Jan. 22, balanced scoring from starters and reserves gave the JV Lady Chargers a 52-7 win at West Point.

For Middlesex, Fells and Self each had 12 points, A. Reed 8, Lucas 6, Blake 5, Khadijah Reed 4, Brown and Latasha Cephas 2 each, and Guill 1.

On Jan. 20, Middlesex defeated Lancaster 38-28.

Middlesex led the whole way and was on top 20-4 at the half and 34-13 at the end of the third period.

For Middlesex, Self had 8 points, A. Reed 7, Fells 6, Robinson 5, Guill 4, and Brown, Blake, Kendra Reed, and Blankenship 2 each.

Middlesex will host King William tonight, Jan. 29. They are at King and Queen on Monday, Feb. 2, and will host Mathews on Thursday, Feb. 5. Their final game of the regular season is at home on Monday, Feb. 9, against West Point.
