Senior Marquez Holmes had a standout game on both offense and defense to lead the Middlesex High School boys varsity basketball team to a 60-55 win over West Point on Friday, February 5, in the MHS gym.
The Chargers (12-7) stormed to a 15-point halftime lead, but the Pointers rallied to cut the lead to 2 points. MHS responded down the stretch to capture the important Conference 42 game.
“We went flat during the third quarter and let them back into the game, but we still did a good job when the game was on the line,” said Charger coach Jon Hatch.
Senior forward Sean Johnson scored a team-high 19 points for MHS, Holmes had 14, Raquan Marshall 12, Dre Key 9, and Demetre South, Carlos Marshall and Jamal Jones 2 apiece.
Holmes, a three-year starter for the Chargers, has been selected to play in the Virginia High School Coaches Association (VHSCA) All Star Game in March in Lynchburg.
The Chargers will host Northern Neck powerhouse Northumberland on Thursday, February 11, in the John S. Clements Memorial Gym at MHS in Saluda. The JV game begins at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game begins at 7 p.m. Seniors participating in winter sports and the MHS band will be recognized between the JV and varsity games.
The Chargers final regular season game will be at Carver at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 12. There will be no JV game.
Tournament play will begin next week but the pairings, dates, times and locations are yet to be determined. Check updates at http://www.SSentinel.com. Tentative tournament dates are February 16, 18 and 19.
