The 2013 Middlesex High School wrestling team has two returnees, DeVante Robertson and Ridge Ellis, who participated in the State Group A Meet last year. Robertson wrestles in the 145-pound weight class and Ellis in the 138-pound class.
“We’ve got a large team in numbers and someone to wrestle in every weight class except one,” said MHS coach Joel Anderson. “We also have a great many wrestlers coming up from the youth wrestling program, which is going to help us greatly.”
There are currently 30 wrestlers on the team.
“We have Ridge coming back and he was sixth in the state last year and we have DeVante who was eighth,” Anderson said. “I’m real excited about our young wrestlers who are showing a great deal of promise.”
The Chargers also have Simon Urban, who Anderson said was second in his weight class in Germany in the freestyle division. A foreign exchange student, Urban wrestles in the 132-pound weight class. “Simon is tough and we are real excited about him being on our team.”
Other exchange students on the team are Miguel Rodriquez and Hamza Ali.
Other returnees are Stephen Skelton, Alex Fomin, Chad Page, Enrique Gonzalez, Chris Farmer and James Williams. Strong newcomers are Tannar Johannson, Alijah Fomin, Andres Row and Marty Bristow coming up from the youth program.
Long time assistant coach Lee Anderson will not be coaching this year due to family commitments. “Lee has been a significant part of Middlesex wrestling for many years and we are going to miss him this year,” said his brother Joel.
Joel Anderson said he will have strong coaching support from Will Moore, who has been helping for six years and is now a paid assistant. “Will was a standout wrestler for Gloucester High School and wrestled two years at VMI. He does an awesome job.” Bob Fleck and Wayne Mount also will be assisting with the team again this year.
“We are looking forward to another awesome year and hope to make the county proud,” said Anderson.
