The Middlesex High School wrestling team will kick off its regular season on Thursday, November 29, at Caroline County High School in a tri-meet against Caroline and King William.
The Chargers are young but have two wrestlers returning, Devante Robertson and Vladimir Rowe, who qualified for the state tournament last year.
The Chargers did lose veterans Darrien Fisher and Brandon Jessup to graduation. Fisher is wrestling in college this year and was strong in the 160-weight class. “We are going to miss Darrien and Brandon,” said MHS coach Joel Anderson. “But we have some strong performers coming back.”
Returning for the Chargers are Blake Damron in the 138-pound weight class; Ridge Ellis in the 132-pound class; Robertson in the 132-pound class; Roe in the 285-pound heavyweight class; and Steve Skelton in the 220-pound weight division.
Other returnees from last season include Alek Fomin, Clayton Hogge, Peter Mantel, Chad Page and Jack Bayard.
“We also have a 26-player roster, which means we will have someone to wrestle in every weight class,” said Anderson.
This has been an ongoing problem for the Chargers over the years as they have been forced to forfeit in many weight classes because of lack of participants, which has resulted in lost meets.
Other members of this year’s team are C. J. Chandler, Lam Quach, Dillan Powell, Chris Powell, Christian Baker, Doug Gartner, Eder Sosa, Anthony Demaurez, Joseph Cockrell, Luke Robertson, Terry Reed, Austin Hudgins, Vance Medina, Timothy Lewis, Kyle Forst, Noel Kellar, Jacob Beebe, Zack O’Bryan, Dameon Warren, Marshall Rivers, Manuel Balderas, Reid Sandate, Bobby Nazrini, Nicholes Roane, James Williams, Damion Key, Matt Green, Michael Tayler, Aleck Wright and J. P. Holman.
“We are very excited about the many new faces on our team,” said Anderson. “Several participated in the youth wrestling program here in the county and that really shows in what they are able to do so early this year.”
