MHS golfers open season on Monday
The Middlesex High golf team will open its season on Monday, August 12, against the Rappahannock Raiders on the Chargers’ home course, Piankatank River Golf Club in Hartfield.
The Chargers have a very young team this year with only five potential golfers whose scores can be counted in varsity matches. While carrying an eight-man squad, three of the golfers are 8th-graders and not eligible for the final team score in match play.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for quite some time,” noted MHS head coach Greg Harrow, who is in his 10th year as golf coach. “To have so many young men on the team is going to be fun this year and in years to come. These guys are willing to work, and I suspect we’ll be very competitive this season once we get some practices and matches under our belt.”
“These four young men have to be the stronghold for our team this year,” said Harrow. “Chris has gotten stronger and is putting in the time and effort to get better. Greg suffered a minor shoulder injury during baseball season this year that has set him back slightly, but his work ethic will put him right back in the groove. Elliot and Will evidently spent some time on the course over the summer as both looked great on the range on the first day of practice.”
“Brandon, although new to the game, hopefully will be able to fill a spot in the lineup, but he’ll need some work prior to our first match,” said Harrow. “He too brings a strong work ethic and the desire to improve.
“Mason, Dale and Thomas are all good athletes and I have no doubt they will earn the team’s respect with their hard work. All three of them have pretty good swings and they are receptive to learning how to get better. It’s going to be exciting watching this team develop this year and in years to come!” said Harrow.
“These three gentleman are priceless to this team and myself,” said Harrow. “They give up their time as much as possible to come out here and help this team develop, and they play a vital role in their success.”
“The Charger squad also thanks the Piankatank River Golf Club (PRGC) for continuing to provide a wonderful support structure to the MHS golf team by providing a beautiful course, range balls, course pro assistance, and great deals for the athletes to encourage them to work on their game,” said Harrow.
