MHS goes after district track title on May 20

The Middlesex High School boys track team easily defeated Tidewater District foes King William and West Point on May 5. The Chargers tallied 74 points compared to 38 for the Cavaliers and 27 for the Pointers.

The Chargers dominated the weight events at the meet. Scott Payne won the discus (114’8”) and the shot put (41’11”).

Cory Keeling finished second in the discus (111’4”) and was fourth in the shot put (35’10”). Bryan Engle captured second in the shot put (40’6”) and Grayson Johnson took fourth (75’11”).

The Chargers also dominated the jumps. Marcus Hammond won the high jump (6’2”), Dale Smith was second (5’6”) and P.J. Hart was third (5’4”).

Chris Henry won the triple jump (42’1”), long jump (21’6”) and 100 meters (11.10), and ran a leg on Middlesex’s first place 4x100 meter relay team (45.01). Jeremy Rich, Hammond and Willie Holmes ran the other legs in the event. Rich also got a first place in the 100-meter high hurdles (16.26).

Others to place were Smith, 2nd, triple jump (38’9”) and 4th, long jump (19’); Rich, 3rd, triple jump (38’), 2nd, long jump (20’ 5.5”) and 3rd, 100 meters (11.48); Chris Baylor, 4th, triple jump (33’6”); and Hart, 2nd, 300-meter intermediate hurdles (50.36) and 4th, high hurdles (19.49).

Cullen Johnson finished 4th in the 1600 meters (6:19); Willie Holmes, 2nd, 400 meters (.54); and Craig Johnson, 3rd, 300-meter intermediate hurdles (52.13).

The Chargers ran at West Point in a quad-meet on May 12 and will compete in the Tidewater District track meet on Thursday, May 20, at West Point High School.

The Sentinel received no report on the MHS girls track team.
