MHS girls win twice

The Middlesex High varsity softball team posted two Tidewater District wins this week, defeating West Point 8-5 on Tuesday and blanking King and Queen 10-0 on May 9.
West Point took an early 3-0 lead aided by MHS errors. The Lady Chargers responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning, added another run in the second inning, 2 more in the third and another in the fifth inning.
“Comebacks are always sweet,” said MHS coach Wade Traynham, “Hopefully we can carry this momentum into the district tournament.
Kaitlyn Weber pitched a complete game and struck out 5 for MHS.
Great defensive plays in the late innings were made by Abigail Foster, Tambria Wake, Shelby Lewter, Avis Keeling, Amanda White and Weber.
Beth Eanes had 2 singles and 2 RBIs. Quinlan Moore tripled, Wake had 2 RBIs, Weber singled in a run, White singled and doubled, Lewter had an RBI, and Foster singled.
Senior Alexis Jackson started on the mound against King and Queen and pitched 2 innings. She was followed by Ashley Walton, Tambria Wake and Kaitlyn Weber. For the Lady Chargers offense, Weber had 2 singles, a home run and an RBI. Quinlan Moore added 2 singles, a triple, and drove in a pair of runs. Alexis Jackson was good for 2 singles and 2 RBIs. With a single apiece were Avis Keeling, Andrea Alvarado, Tambria Wake and Amanda White.
Freshman Olivia “Colonel” Major got experience behind the plate, catching for half the game.
“Everyone got in the game and they all played well in the field,” said Lady Charger coach Wade Traynham.
Middlesex visits King William at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, in its regular season finale.
