MHS girls win fourth in girls state track meet

The Middlesex High School (MHS) girls track team finished fourth as a team with 45 points in the Virginia 1A State Championship Meet at East Rockingham High School in Elkton on Friday and Saturday, June 1-2.

The meet was a weather event as most all scheduled races and jumps on Friday were rained out, and on Saturday rain poured from 10:30 a.m. through the last event of the day.

The Lady Chargers were paced by senior Michaela Chowning and sophomore Katherine Campbell who scored 31 of the Lady Chargers’ 45 points. Chowning and Campbell were double first-place winners.

Chowning won the high jump beating number one ranked Casey Allen of Altavista. Both Chowning and Allen jumped 5’2” but Chowning won the event by having fewer misses. She also ran a leg on Middlesex’s winning 4x100 meter relay team (52.7) and finished third in the 400 meters (1:02.4). She was the high scorer for the team with 18.5 points.

Campbell upset top-seeded Savannah Blake of Northumberland High School to win the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (48.79). Campbell’s winning time was the fastest clocked 300-meter hurdle race by a 1A female runner this year. Prior to the race on Saturday, Blake was the fastest with a time of 49.01. Campbell also ran a leg on Middlesex’s winning 4x100 meter relay team. She scored a total of 12.5 points.
