MHS girls win district opener

by Tom Chillemi

The Middlesex High varsity volleyball team defeated West Point in its Tidewater District opener Tuesday night. More details will be in next week’s Sentinel.

The Lady Chargers also lost a pair of non-district matches recently.

Middlesex lost to visiting Rappahannock 25-16, 26-24 and 25-20 on September 20.

Team energy was much better, said Lady Charger coach Jennifer Harrow.  “We are still not communicating as much as we need to be, and we had a very inconsistent night.”

Middlesex had trouble handling serves by a couple of the Rappahannock players, said Harrow. “I truly feel that with the talent of my team and what I see in practice, if they performed to their best ability each game, they would be 8-0 at this time.”

For Middlesex, Jordan Walton had 4 aces, 3 kills, 13 assists, 12 digs; Brittin Payne 2 aces, 7 kills, 8 digs, 1 solo block; Erika Britton, 4 assists; Mollie Ballantyne, 1 kill, 2 assists, 1 dig; Madison Thomas, 3 aces, 6 kills, 4 digs, 1 solo block; Angel Abbott, 2 digs; Sarah Ann Goodrich, 6 kills, 2 assists, 4 digs; and Brooke Rowe, 4 kills, 2 solo blocks.

Lack of communication also was key in Middlesex’s 25-17, 25-12 and 25-21 loss at Lancaster on September 18. “When the girls talk, their energy rises, and they play so much better,” said Harrow.

For Middlesex against Lancaster, Jordan Walton had 1 ace, 4 kills, 8 assists, 5 digs, 1 double block; Erika Britton, 1 ace, 6 assists, 2 digs, 2 double blocks; Brittin Payne, 3 kills, 1 assist, 8 digs; Mollie Ballantyne, 2 kills, 3 digs; Madison Thomas, 2 aces, 3 kills, 3 digs, 1 double block; Angel Abbott, 1 assist, 4 digs; Sarah Ann Goodrich, 1 ace, 5 kills, 10 digs; Brooke Rowe, 2 digs; and Lauren Bleeker, 1 assist, 2 digs.

The Middlesex volleyball teams have two district matches next week. They are at King William on Tuesday, October 2, and will host King and Queen on Thursday, October 4. JV games are at 6 p.m. and are followed by varsity games at 7:30 p.m.
