MHS girls visit Mathews in district showdown thurs

Middlesex’s Ashley Williams bumps a shot in the win over King and Queen.
The Middlesex High varsity volleyball team visits Mathews Thursday, October 29, for a chance to avenge their only Tidewater District loss of the season.

Undefeated Mathews is atop the Tidewater District as the rivals go into the final match of the regular season at 7:30 p.m. A win would give Middlesex a share of the regular season title.

The district tournament will be on Thursday, Nov. 5, at Mathews. At 4 p.m., seed #1 plays seed # 4; and at 5:30 p.m., seed #2 plays seed #3. Twenty minutes after the second game, the championship game will be played.

Last week the Lady Chargers (6-1, 12-3) won at King William 25-11, 25-22, 25-19; and defeated King and Queen 25-4, 25-8, 25-10 on Monday.

At King William, Kelsey Hainley had 4 aces, 12 digs, 15 assists, 4 kills for Middlesex; Jillien Puster, 2 aces, 7 digs, 8 assists, 9 kills; Hayley Guess, 2 aces, 4 digs, 5 kills; Raquel Pierce, 1 ace, 2 digs, 6 kills; Maggie Hall, 1 ace, 12 digs, 1 assist; Chelsea Lewter, 1 ace, 10 digs, 2 kills; Joey Stinchcomb, 2 blocks; Allyson Sharpe, 2 digs; and Ashley Lane, 1 kill.

“I’m really impressed how well these girls can adjust to injuries,” said Middlesex coach Jennifer Harrow. “We have had four injuries during the season and each time someone has stepped up to fill in that position.
“They really played well and together on the court. They are becoming more focused on the court, allowing them to defend better,” said Harrow.

Against visiting King and Queen, Jillien Puster served 15 aces, had a dig and 4 kills; Kelsey Hainley, 1 ace, 2 digs, 4 assists, 1 kill; Hayley Guess, 7 aces; Megan Payne, 1 kill; Raquel Pierce, 1 ace, 2 kills; Maggie Hall, 8 aces, 3 assists, 2 kills; Chelsea Lewter, 2 digs, 1 kill; Caroline Davis, 4 aces, 1 kill; Ashley Williams, 1 ace; Joey Stinchcomb, 2 aces, 3 kills; and Jessica Dixon, 3 aces, 3 assists.
