MHS girls to host Cavs on Tuesday

The Middlesex High varsity volleyball team held on for a win against Colonial Beach and also defeated W&L, but the Lady Chargers lost a close match to Lancaster and Rappahannock in recent non-district action.

Middlesex held off a Lady Drifter challenge in game three for an overtime win to take the match, 25-6, 25-12 and 26-24 on September 24.

“The team moved and communicated well,” said Lady Charger coach Jennifer Harrow. “We are starting off stronger and I hope it continues into our district play.” Brittin Payne played strong defense and Morgan had a strong consistent serve that helped in our wins.

Erika Britton led Middlesex with 6 aces, 8 assists, a kill and 2 digs. Also for Middlesex, Chelsea Hall 4 aces, 3 assists, a kill; Austen Taylor Dozier, 3 assists, 2 digs; Madison Thomas, 1 assists, 2 kills; Shelby Lewter, 1 ace, 3 kills; Brittin Payne, 1 assist, 3 kills, 3 digs; Sarah Ann Goodrich, 2 aces, 2 digs; Angel Abbott, 2 digs; Lauren Bleeker, 2 aces, 2 kills, 1 dig; Morgan Blake, 5 aces, 2 kills, 2 digs, 1 block; Beth Eanes, 2 aces, 1 kill, 2 digs; and Rachael Howard, 2 kills.

MHS lost a close match to visiting Lancaster recently. MHS won the first and third games 25-23 and 25-19. Lancaster won the other games 25-18, 25-18 and 16-14.

“This was by far the most energetic and hard played game we have had to date,” said Harrow. “These girls played with heart and I was extremely proud of them. We almost had the match, but I believe nerves struck a bit in the end.”

Britton was good for 3 aces, 18 assists, 1 kill and 2 digs; Hall, 3 aces, 7 assists, 3 kills, 2 digs, 1 block; Madison Thomas, 2 aces, 5 kills, 6 digs; Lewter, 2 aces, 1 kill; Payne, 4 aces, 7 kills, 2 digs, 1 block; Goodrich, 4 aces, 7 kills, 6 digs; Bleeker, 3 digs; Blake, 2 aces, 1 kill, 1 dig; Eanes, 3 aces, 2 kills, 1 assist, 9 digs, 2 blocks; and Howard, 1 kill, 2 digs.

Middlesex won only the third game (25-18) at Rappahannock, which won the other games 25-7, 25-23 and 25-14.

Britton has been a very consistent server recently with 50 serves, 8 of which were aces, and no errors.

MHS defeated W&L in three games, 25-18, 25-11 and 25-23. W&L took the second game 25-20. Hall had 10 assists, 2 kills, 1 dig, 1 solo block, 1 block assist; Abbot,t 5 aces, 1 kill, 5 digs; Payne, 8 aces, 6 kills and 4 digs; and Lewter, 6 kills, an ace and a block assist.

In tournament matches on September 27-28, Middlesex suffered several injuries in the first match. The Lady Chargers lost to Trinity after winning the first game 25-22. Trinity came back to win 25-19, 25-18 and 27-25.

In other tournament action, Bishop Irenton defeated MHS 25-22 and 25-13, and Peninsula Catholic downed the Lady Chargers 25-11 and 25-15.

Middlesex will host King William on Tuesday, October 8, in Tidewater District action. The JVs play at 6 p.m. and the varsity game follows at 7:30 p.m.
