The Middlesex High varsity volleyball team opened its Tidewater District season on September 25 by sweeping visiting West Point in three games, 25-23, 25-13 and 26-24. Middlesex also lost a district match at King William on October 2.
“I could tell when the girls were warming up before the West Point match that they wanted this win,” said MHS coach Jennifer Harrow. “It was one of those great games where I could get everyone in to play and they played well. We still have to work on communication and being confident, but this match was an improvement and I hope we continue to grow from here.”
Harrow said Mollie Ballantyne played “a strong defensive game” with 9 digs, and freshman Beth Eanes “played with a confidence usually not shown by such a young player.”
One of the best parts of the match was the last game, said Harrow. “We were getting behind and during a time-out, we discussed the low communication and energy. The girls expressed their desire to win and went out to do just that.”
Jordan Walton served with West Point leading 24-20 in the last game. A missed serve, a bad hit or pass would have given the game to West Point.
The West Point coach used both of her timeouts to try to break Walton’s concentration. Coach Harrow said, “During the second timeout, Jordan said, ’She needs to quit, it’s not going to work.’ Jordan knew that she was going to get her serve in and it’s great to see that confidence shine.”
For Middlesex, Walton had 4 aces, 8 kills, 10 assists and 5 digs; Erika Britton, 2 aces, 10 assists, 2 digs; Brittin Payne, 5 kills, 2 digs; Chelsea Hall, 1 assist; Mollie Ballantyne, 1 ace, 3 kills, 9 digs; Shelby Lewter, 2 aces; Madison Thomas, 5 aces, 4 kills, 1 dig; Angel Abbott, 2 kills, 2 digs; Sarah Ann Goodrich, 1 ace, 3 kills, 2 digs; Beth Eanes, 1 assist; Brooke Rowe, 3 kills, 2 digs; and Lauren Bleeker, 2 digs.
Middlesex will host King and Queen in a district match on Thursday, October 4, and is at Mathews on Tuesday, October 9. JV games are at 6 p.m. and are followed by varsity games at 7:30 p.m.
