MHS girls sweep Drifters

The Middlesex High varsity volleyball team split a pair of non-district matches in recent action, defeating Colonial Beach and losing to Northumberland.

On September 12, Middlesex won in three games at Colonial Beach 25-6, 25-19 and 25-16. “The girls moved better and communicated better,” said MHS coach Jennifer Harrow. “They were more confident.”

Serving also improved greatly with 7 out of 10 girls serving a perfect game. There were just 4 serving errors.

Harrow noted that Erika Britton had 17 great serves, without an error, 4 of which were aces; and Rachael Howard made some great defensive plays.

Madison Thomas had 4 aces, 5 kills and 4 digs. Erika Britton was good for 4 aces, 4 assists, 1 kill and 2 digs. Also for Middlesex, Chelsea Hall, 2 assists, 1 kill; Austen Taylor Dozier, 1 dig; Beth Eanes, 1 kill, 6 digs, 1 block; Rachael Howard, 2 aces, 1 kill, 4 digs; Morgan Blake, 2 aces, 1 dig; Lauren Bleeker, 1 kill, 3 digs; Brittin Payne 1 assist; Sarah Ann Goodrich, 2 kills, 1 dig; and Angel Abbott, 2 digs.

On September 10, Northumberland defeated Middlesex 25-15, 25-15, 25-10.

“Our scores don’t match our ability,” said Harrow. “Northumberland had a lot more hustle and energy than we did. If the girls would transfer their practice play to game time, I truly believe that we would be undefeated.”

Middlesex had 18 service errors, which are free points for the other team, she added.

For Middlesex against Northumberland, Britton had 9 assists, 2 kills, 1 dig; Hall, 1 ace, 5 assists, 4 kills; Thomas, 2 aces, 3 kills, 1 dig; Shelby Lewter, 2 aces, 1 kill; Payne, 1 kill, 1 dig; Goodrich, 1 ace, 2 kills; Bleeker, 1 kill, 1 dig; and Blake, 4 digs.

The Lady Chargers (3-4) hosted Lancaster on September 17, and will travel to Rappahannock on Thursday, September 19. They will host Colonial Beach on Tuesday, September 24.

The JV plays at 6 p.m. and the varsity follows at 7:30 p.m.
