The Middlesex High School girls varsity basketball team has eight returning players and five new players.
Brittin Payne and Givonnie Reed are the returning seniors. Junior Grace Rutkowski also returns.
Returning sophomores include Avis Keeling, Monica Ward, Gabby Hopkins, Tambria Wake and Zinnie Reed.
Newcomers include juniors Andri Rowe and Breanna South, and sophomores Ali Bibee, Olivia Major and Jazmine Faucett.
The team has made progress in practices, said head coach Neil Wake, who returns for his fourth year as head coach. “The kids seem to have caught up with the speed of the game. The team last year had very little experience except for Brittin Payne, but we all have an extra year with us now.
“We have to find a way to get it done defensively and everything else should fall into place,” said Wake.
“We played pretty hard in our first scrimmage (at W&L) and the longer we played, the better we got,” said Wake.
Michael Lewis Sr., who was JV head coach last season, will be the assistant coach.
Wake is looking forward to the season that begins on Monday, December 2, when the JV and varsity Lady Chargers host Surry. The JV plays starting at 6 p.m., and the varsity plays at 7:30 p.m.
“We are anxious to get this journey started,” said Wake.
The Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (ARGS) visits the MHS girls on Wednesday, December 4, at 6 p.m. A boys varsity game between the two schools follow at 8 p.m.
