MHS girls deck K&Q in tourney’s opening round

The Middlesex girls varsity basketball team breezed past sixth-seeded King and Queen on Friday, 74-15, in the first round of the Tidewater District Tournament.
The Lady Chargers (8-3, 16-7) advanced to play at second seed West Point (8-2, 15-2) on Wednesday, Feb. 18, in the tournament semifinals. The Lady Pointers are ranked 8th in the latest State Group A poll and defeated Middlesex both times they met in the regular season.
Top-seeded Mathews (9-1, 18-3), the state’s 4th-ranked team, played the Colonial Beach-King William winner on Feb. 18 in the other semifinal. Middlesex handed Mathews its only district loss during the regular season.

The tournament championship game is Friday, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m. at King William High School. The boys championship game will follow at about 8 p.m.
On Friday, the Lady Chargers easily handled winless King and Queen. Ashae Burnett led Middlesex with 18 points, and Kiersten Baylor and Katrina Reed each added 13 points. Micah Reed had 10, Raquel Pierce 6, Amanda Brown 5, Tanicka Kimble 3, and Kristen Andrews, Chelsea Lewter and Kimberly Ammons 2 apiece.
