MHS girls cruise to track title

The Middlesex High girls track team won the Tidewater District Championship on May 13 at West Point. The Lady Chargers scored 161 points to easily outdistance second place King William’s 104 points.

West Point was third with 85 points, Mathews fourth with 65 and King and Queen Central fifth with 33.

“We are very pleased with the outcome,” said MHS coach Heath Cockerham. “We carried 13 girls and 12 placed in at least one event. We are looking forward to the regional meet and are hopeful we can win it too.”

The Lady Chargers were paced by Olivia Cloud and Missy Hall, who were both double individual winners. Cloud won the 1600 meters (6:02.26) and also won the 3200 meters (13:51.44). 

Hall is coming off a heal injury but cruised to wins in the 400 meters (67.85) and 800 meters (2:47.3). She also finished fifth in the triple jump (27’ 3.5”) and ran a leg on the second place 4x400 meter relay team (4:47.26). Other members of the 4 x 400 meter relay team were Ariel Perry, Rebecca Walker and Lauren Beebe.

Hall has already turned in a time that qualifies her to run in the regional 1600 meters.

Walker was second in the 1600 meters (6:10), third in the 800 meters (2:52.72) and sixth in the triple jump (26’ 7”).

Ashae Burnett had an outstanding all-around meet by placing in five events. She won the shot put (35’4”), was second in the high jump (4’ 4”), third in the 300-meter hurdles (58.64), fourth in the triple jump (27’ 8.5”) and fourth in the discus (68’).

Beebe came off the soccer team to compete and was third in the long jump (14’4.5”), third in the 100 meters (13.94), and third in the 200 meters (30.55)

Micah Reed was third in the shot put (30’ 3”), sixth in the long jump (13’ 11”) and fifth in the high jump (4’0).

Felicia Marsh was third in the 400 meters (70.28) and fourth in the 200 meters (31.11).

Middlesex took third in the 400-meter relay (58.58). Members were Latasha Cephas, Jasmine Fells, Davina Peters and Mary Stevens.

Others to place were Drachelle Johnson, fourth, shot put (29’5”); Cephas, fourth, 100 meters (14.3), and sixth, 200 meters (32.52); Fells, fifth, 100 meters (14.95); and Perry, second, 400 meters (69.9); and Peters, sixth, 300-meter hurdles (62.24). 

Performers who placed in the Tidewater District meet qualifies for the Region A meet that will be held today, May 21, at 2 p.m. at West Point High School.
