MHS girls advance to Region A semifinals

Walks and long-ball hits propelled the Middlesex High School varsity softball team to a 8-0 win over Northampton in the first round of the Group 1A Region A Tournament on June 2 on the Eastern Shore.
Avis Keeling belted a home run over the fence, Quinlan Moore tripled, Shelby Lewter singled, and Rachael Howard had two successful bunts, one of which scored a key run early in the game.
“Great defensive plays were executed” to hold Northampton scoreless, said MHS coach Wade Traynham. Zariah Freeze snagged a line shot with Northampton runners on base. Moore made a running catch with runners on base, and Abigail Foster had a running catch to save a hit.
MHS pitcher Kaitlyn Weber was in control the whole game and threw just 88 pitches.
On June 4 the Lady Chargers played at Rappahannock in the semifinals of the Region A Tournament. The finals are Friday on the home field of the highest seed.
In the semifinals of the Conference 42 Tournament, Middlesex defeated West Point 7-1 on May 28. Consistent defense aided the Lady Chargers.
Quinlan Moore singled, doubled and tripled to lead the MHS offense. Avis Keeling homered, Tambria Wake added a double and 2 singles, and Rachael Howard singled.
MHS pitcher Kaitlyn Weber struck out 6 and gave up just 4 hits.
Host Mathews defeated Middlesex 11-1 in the Conference 42 Tournament championship game on May 30.
Moore and Keeling were the only Lady Chargers to reach base. They each had two singles.
All-District and other awards will be presented at the MHS awards banquet on Thursday, June 5.
