MHS falls to Devils; to host K&Q Thursday

The Middlesex Chargers hit the ball hard but lost 11-6 to Mathews on Friday at Deltaville Ballpark.
The Chargers stroked 10 hits off Blue Devil ace pitcher Ryan Ewell. “That’s the best we’ve hit him in three years,” said Middlesex coach Timmy Blake.
Mathews jumped to a 7-0 lead. The Chargers scored 4 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Zach Belcher walked, Andrew Dozier singled, Kyle Lawson doubled home Belcher, Hunter Davis walked, John Purcell singled home Dozier, and Trey Major delivered a two-run double to cut the Blue Devil lead to 7-4.
Mathews stretched its lead to 11-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning when the Chargers scored 2 more runs. Kyle Lawson walked, Jeremy Collier singled and Hunter Davis drove them both home with a double.
Collier had 3 singles to pace the Chargers; K. Lawson, a double and single; Purcell, 2 singles; Major and Davis, a double apiece; and Dozier, a single.
K. Lawson and Kyle Shelton shared pitching duties for Middlesex.
The Chargers’ scheduled game against King William on May 7 was rained out.
MHS will host King and Queen on Thursday, May 9, at 5 p.m. at Deltaville Ball Park. The Chargers have make-up games on Tuesday, May 14, at home against West Point, and at King William on Thursday, May 16.
