MHS baseball team to host NHS Thursday
by Tom Hardin
Despite only having a few days of outdoor practice during an extremely cold and wet March, the Middlesex High School varsity baseball team will open its season Thursday, March 27, at 5 p.m. against Northumberland at Deltaville Ballpark.
The Chargers also play Rappahannock in Deltaville on Tuesday, April 1, at 5 p.m.
Timmy Blake begins his 15th year of coaching the Chargers. “We have four or five players with good arms that can pitch. The key will be playing good defense behind them,” he said.
Senior Kyle Lawson returns to the mound for MHS and will also play the infield and outfield. “Kyle was one of our top pitchers last year and he is very versatile. He can play anywhere,” said Blake.
Senior Kyle Shelton returns to the outfield and will also pitch. “Kyle is a very good fielder and can play a number of positions,” said Blake.
Senior Brandon Sjolie will play in the outfield. “Brandon’s working hard every day to try to improve his game,” said Blake.
Another senior, Austin Cooper, is a transfer from Christchurch School. He will catch and can pitch if needed. “He’s tough behind the plate and has a real quick release,” said Blake. “He swings the bat well and should put some pop in our lineup.”
The only returning junior is Chris Blake. At 6’4” in height, Blake will play first base. “He has gotten stronger and is hitting better this year,” said Coach Blake. “Also, he’s a big target at first base.”
In addition to Cooper other newcomers include junior Matt Horne, sophomores Adam White, Mason Phillips, Maurice Nelson, Trey Blankenship and Jacob Kirby, and freshmen Alex Fitchett and Greg Pitts.
The Chargers will play all their home games at Deltaville Ball Park.
