Mathews, undefeated in the Tidewater District, downed Middlesex 2-0 on Tuesday in Saluda.
Mathews scored one run in the fourth inning and another in the sixth inning.
The Lady Chargers scattered 3 hits, while their defense kept the score within reach.
Lady Charger coach Wade Traynham praised his team. “It was a great effort. We played well. I’m very proud of them. They worked hard.”
Middlesex shortstop Amanda Brown recorded 7 putouts and fielded a sharp hit up the middle and threw out the runner at first base. Brown also singled.
Maggie Hall had an “outstanding” defensive play at third, said Traynham. She fielded a grounder, stepped on third, and threw to first base for a double play to stop a Mathews threat.
Second baseman Chelsea Lewter knocked down two hard line drive shots for outs.
Ashley Lane pitched well and gave up only one earned run.
Raquel Pierce and Ashley Williams each singled.
The Lady Chargers face King William today, May 14, at 4 p.m. in Saluda. A win by the Chargers (4-3) would tie them with King William.
