Mariners sweep Tides

The Middle Peninsula Mariners swept a doubleheader against the Tappahannock Tides Saturday, 5-3 and 9-4. With the wins, Middle Peninsula completed a season sweep of the Tides and extended their winning streak to 12 games.

Greg Mitro started the Mariners offense in the first game Saturday with a solo home run to left.

Tappahannock capitalized on 3 hits and 2 Mariners errors in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

Middle Peninsula responded quickly in the bottom half as they pushed across 2 runs on 2 Tides errors.

Scott Crump doubled home Mitro in the bottom of the fifth to put the Mariners on top. Crump would score on an error later in the inning giving Middle Peninsula a 5-3 lead.

Mariners’ starting pitcher Matt Tiller (4-0) had another strong outing and shut down the Tappahannock offense in the final innings. Tiller picked up his fourth complete game win of the season, allowing one earned run and striking out 6.

Mitro led Middle Peninsula at the plate going 2 for 3 with a home run. Also for the Mariners: Scott Crump, single, double, RBI; Travis Crump, Drew Hooper and James Bierlein, a single each; Andre Carr, single, walk; and J.C. Mosicki, walk.

The Mariners used aggressive base running and patience at the plate in the second game against Tappahannock Saturday. Middle Peninsula stole 8 bases and drew 6 walks en route to a 9-4 victory. 

Travis Crump reached base the bottom of the first and scored on an error. Mitro and Scott Crump followed later in the inning with RBI groundouts.

Middle Peninsula scored a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the third to take a 4-0 lead.

Carr drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth, stretching the lead to 5-0.

Tappahannock rallied for 2 runs in the sixth on an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

The Mariners batted around in the bottom half, scoring 4 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks. Hooper had an RBI single and Mitro drew a bases-loaded walk.

After allowing 2 runs in the top of the seventh, Mariners’ starter William Saunders (2-1) settled in to pick up the complete game win. Saunders allowed 4 earned runs and struck out 5 to get his second win of the season.

Offensively for the Mariners: Mitro, 2 singles, 2 RBIs, 2 stolen bases; Travis Crump, 2 singles, 2 stolen bases; Hooper, 2 singles, RBI, stolen base; Carr, single, 2 stolen bases; Mosicki, single; Bierlein, 2 walks; James Moore, walk, stolen base; and Scott Crump, RBI.

The Mariners are idle this coming weekend.
