Mariners second baseman Greg Mitro crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 9th inning, and the Middle Peninsula Mariners captured a 5-4 comeback win over the Deltaville Deltas on Friday night.
The match-up, dubbed “The Battle for the Ballpark,” looked to go the Deltas way in the early going. Deltaville’s Chris Williams led off the top of the first with a single and later scored on a Billy Funk RBI single.
Another RBI single by Matt Brown scored Ryan Wiggins from third to give Deltaville an early 2-0 advantage.
Deltaville stretched their lead to 4-0 in the top of the 4th on RBI singles by Chris King and Jimmy Denny.
Deltas pitcher Jay Moore held the Mariners’ lineup in check, allowing 2 runs on just 5 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.
Middle Peninsula finally broke through in the bottom of the 7th inning with a one-out single from catcher J.C. Mosicki. Travis Crump followed with a walk, putting runners at first and second with one out.
James Bierlein then ripped an RBI single, and Travis Crump scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
In the top of the 9th and the score 4-2, the Deltas threatened to add to their lead with no outs and runners on second and third. However, Mariners’ closer James Bierlein induced two pop flies and a ground out to end the inning.
Middle Peninsula began their 9th inning rally by being patient at the plate, as Bierlein and David Smiy drew walks. The Mariners took advantage of two wild pitches to score Bierlein and advance Smiy to third. Greg Mitro was issued a walk then stole second to put runners at second and third with one out. James Moore then singled to left scoring Smiy and tying the game 4-4.
With the winning run on third and Scott Crump at the plate, a pitch bounced in front of the plate and rolled to the backstop, easily allowing Mitro to score the game winning run.
Bierlein picked up the win in his one inning of relief for the Mariners. Starting pitcher Matt Tiller went 6 innings and allowed 3 earned runs on 7 hits and struck out 5. Dallas Wagner threw 2 innings of relief and allowed just 2 hits.
Travis Crump and J.C. Mosicki led Middle Peninsula at the plate with 2 singles a piece. Bierlein and Moore each had RBI singles.
Also for the Mariners, Smiy had a single and two walks; Mitro, a walk and a stolen base; Bryan Hannum, a walk; and Trey Powell, a walk.
The Deltas were paced offensively by Denny’s 3 singles, and Brown’s double and single. Funk added a pair of singles, and Williams, Wiggins and King each singled.
Reliever Ryan Wiggins took the loss for Deltaville.
