Deltas slugger Matt Brown stepped to the plate with two on and two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning, representing the winning run. He drove a deep fly ball to center field, bidding to make Friday night the third consecutive game ended by a walk-off hit in the Deltaville Deltas-Middle Peninsula Mariners rivalry.

He was just yards shy.

Mariners center fielder Drew Hooper reeled in Brown’s fly ball, and the Mariners defeated the Deltas in yet another back-and-forth nail-biter at Deltaville Ballpark.

Deltaville (11-3) broke up the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Jimmy Denny scored on a bases-loaded walk by Tim Grandy.

Middle Peninsula (13-1) answered back with two runs in the top of the 4th, taking advantage of 3 Deltas errors. Scott Crump scored on a fielder’s choice and J.C. Mosicki came home on an errant throw that should have been the final out of the inning.

The Mariners added another run in the 5th on an RBI groundout by Scott Crump.

Deltaville then rallied to take back the lead in the bottom of the 5th. Luke Saunders ripped a 3-run home run to center field, plating Brown and Grandy, to give the Deltas a 4-3 advantage.

Travis Crump of the Mariners had two singles in the win over the Deltas.

However, the decisive rally for the Mariners came in the 6th. Middle Peninsula scored five runs with 2 outs to take an 8-4 lead. James Bierlein drew a bases-loaded walk to start the scoring, and then Travis Crump scored on a wild pitch. Greg Mitro followed with a two-run double, and later scored on another Deltas error to cap the inning.

Saunders came up big again for the Deltas in the 7th with an RBI double, cutting the lead to 8-5. The Mariners responded when Bierlein scored on a Crump fielder’s choice.

In the bottom of the 9th, Deltaville began mounting their final comeback. Dave Cunningham singled and Justin Ferrell reached on a walk. With two outs, Ryan Wiggins ripped a 2-run double to right-center, cutting the lead to 9-7. Brett Crawford followed with a single to bring Brown to the plate. However, Brown’s drive was hauled in by a running Hooper in deep center field to end the game.

Dallas Wagner (3-0) earned the win on the mound for the Mariners. Wagner pitched 6 innings and allowed 5 runs while striking out 2. Matt Tiller (4-0) pitched a perfect 7th inning. Middle Peninsula closer James Bierlein (2-0, 3 saves) picked up the 2-inning save. Bierlein allowed 2 runs and struck out 3.

Relief pitcher Josh Youngman (3-1) took the loss for Deltaville, getting tagged for 4 runs (3 earned) in 2/3 of an inning on the mound. Starter Mike Newton pitched effectively into the 6th inning, allowing 4 runs (2 earned). Ryan Wiggins pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing a run, and Justin Ferrell allowed no runs while striking out 4 in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Greg Mitro led the Mariners at the plate going 3 for 5 with a double, 2 RBIs, and a stolen base. Also for Middle Peninsula: Travis Crump 2 singles; Gary Williams, 2 singles, RBI; J.C. Mosicki, single, walk; Bierlein, 4 walks, RBI; Hooper, walk; and Scott Crump 2 RBIs, a stolen base.

The Deltas were paced offensively by Wiggins, who collected 4 hits, including a double. Saunders homered and doubled, and Dustin Felvus and Crawford singled twice. Brown doubled, and Jonathon Somers, Dave Cunningham and Jimmy Denny each singled.

The Deltas and Mariners both had league games last weekend. See other related articles for those recaps.
