The Middlesex High School junior varsity football team lost a close 14-6 non-district game against Lancaster on Wednesday, September 10.
The Chargers (0-2) were paced offensively by Malik Henderson and Raheem Lockley. Henderson carried the ball 7 times for 61 yards and scored Middlesex’s only touchdown on a 6-yard run.
Quarterback Lockley rushed 12 times for 68 yards and completed one pass in 5 attempts for 9 yards. Henderson caught Lockley’s only pass completion. Lockley also threw an interception.
Others to shine on offense for MHS were Chris Chamberlain who contributed 28 yards on 8 carries from the wingback position, and Mike Johnson who rushed for 10 yards on 4 carries.
On defense, Brandon Keyser stopped a Lancaster drive with an interception, and the entire Charger defensive line stepped up a notch in the second half to shut out LHS after intermission.
The Red Devils’ first score came in the early minutes of the first quarter on a four-play, 37-yard drive. The Red Devils also converted on the two-point conversion.
The second touchdown came on an 89-yard pass play with 4:13 left in the first half. The extra point attempt failed and LHS led 14-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Chargers took control of the game defensively, but had trouble being successful in the red zone. On two occasions MHS had the ball inside the Red Devils’ 10 yard line and could not score. Finally, Henderson was able to reach paydirt to avoid the shutout.
The Chargers traveled to Essex on Wednesday, September 17, and will travel to Mathews on Monday, September 22.
Junior varsity games start at 6:30 p.m.
