League cancels youth football season

by Larry Chowning

The Middlesex County Youth Football League of Virginia Inc. has decided not to field youth football teams in the upcoming 2018 football season.

The president of the league, Sara Bristow Garringer, reported in a July 21 email that “the Colts will not have a season this year due to low participation.” She said the board and parents made the decision with a vote on July 15.

Youth football has struggled in Middlesex over the years. There have been two other attempts at youth football programs. The first was in the mid-1960s when the Urbanna Colts was formed and played in the Northern Neck Midget Football League. The Urbanna team was undefeated in league play in 1966.

“I am sorry that the (youth) league folded but things are different from when we started this league seven years ago in 2011,” Hamilton said. “I still see football as a positive sport that teaches the importance of a team. It brings everyone together to accomplish a goal.”
