Lawson’s one-hitter, Fitchett’s 4 RBIs lead Middlesex past Panthers, 12-0

The Middlesex Chargers varsity baseball team is on a two-game winning streak after blanking Charles City 12-0 Tuesday at Charles City.
The game was scoreless until the Chargers tallied a run in the third inning when Alex Fitchett walked, stole second base, and scored on an Austin Cooper single.
MHS added four more runs in the fourth inning. Adam White and Maurice Nelson each walked and, with two outs, Fitchett hit an inside-the-park home run. Kyle Shelton then singled and scored on a triple by Kyle Lawson for a 5-0 Charger lead.
Middlesex (2-4) broke the game open with seven runs in the fifth inning when Mason Phillips and Nelson each walked; Greg Pitts laid down a bunt single to load the bases; Fitchett singled home a run; Shelton singled home two runs; Lawson and Cooper each singled home a run; and Chris Blake delivered a two-run single.
In addition to the Charger hits listed above, White also had a double.
Lawson pitched his best game of the year and had a no-hitter with two outs in the final inning, which was the 5th. Lawson had hit two Panther batters to put runners on first and second base. A Charles City batter then singled to center field, and when the runner tried to score from second base on the play he was gunned down at the plate on a throw by Fitchett, which preserved the shutout.
“Kyle had some arm trouble the past few weeks and this is the best he has pitched all year,” said MHS coach Timmy Blake. “He threw the ball hard and well.”
Lawson finished with eight strikeouts and two walks.
The Middlesex JV and varsity baseball games scheduled against Lancaster on Friday, April 25, have been cancelled due to the season-opening of the Middlesex Little League that same night at the Middlesex Sports Complex. The Chargers visit King William on Monday, April 28, and host King and Queen at Deltaville Ballpark on Tuesday, April 29. Both games are at 5 p.m.
