Lancaster boys and girls are Region A champions

Members of the Lancaster High School basketball teams display their Region A championship trophies.

Lancaster High scored a dual victory Saturday night as its boys and girls basketball teams captured their respective Region A Division 2 tournament championships at LHS. By doing so, both teams earn a home berth in next weekend’s State Group A, Division 2 Tournament quarterfinals. The time and place for the state games have not been determined.

In Saturday’s first championship game, the Lady Devils pulled away early, outscoring Northumberland 19-7 in the first quarter and never trailing in a 66-35 win.

Andrea White paced Lancaster and led all scorers, putting up 24 points before coming out with an ankle injury in the fourth quarter. White, the Northern Neck District Player of the Year, took home two more trophies following the championship as the Region A Player of the Year and the Region A Tournament MVP.

Tyesha Harvey added 14 points for Lancaster and Kantice Rice led the Lady Indians with 13.

In the boys final, Joseph Betts scored 21 points to lead three double-digit scorers for Lancaster, which topped Northampton 71-57. Betts earned All-Region honors and was named the MVP of the boys tournament. He sank 12 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to help Lancaster break open a close game. The Devils led the Tigers by only 5 points with two minutes to play.

Javin Gibson chipped in 15 points for LHS and Tevin Moore scored 14.

Darius Robinson led Northampton with 19.
