The Middlesex varsity volleyball team is 15-2 going into a showdown at undefeated Mathews tonight, Thursday, October 11, at 7 p.m. The Lady Chargers will be looking to avenge an earlier loss to Mathews, which is the defending state champion.

The Lady Chargers defeated Carver Academy in three games on October 5, handled Rappahannock in three games on October 8, and downed King and Queen on October 9.

Middlesex defeated Rappahannock 25-16, 25-18 and 25-20.

“Airiana Beverley played her best defensive game yet” with 15 digs, 10 kills and 1 ace, said Lady Charger coach Brian Walton.

Libero Elizabeth Ketner, “the defensive leader,” had 16 digs, 1 kill and served 100% with 1 ace.

Makenzie Bristow “played very well” with 8 kills and served 93% with 2 aces.

Laura Walton had 26 assists, 2 aces, 7 kills and 5 digs. Sarah Walton had 5 kills, 2 aces and 3 digs serving at 92%. Ellie McMinn served 100% with 2 aces and 6 kills.

Developing players Abby Purcell, Hunter Dunlevy and Hope Britton “are really stepping up their defense!” said Coach Walton.

“Lane Anderson is really starting to come into her own at the net,” said Coach Walton. Anderson added 2 kills and “is touching a lot of balls defensively at the net!”

The Middlesex JVs lost to Rappahannock. After winning game one 28-26, the JV Lady Chargers fell 25-17 and 17-15.

The JV and varsity Lady Chargers will host Northampton on Tuesday, October 16; and wind up their regular season at West Point on Thursday, October 18. The JV plays at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity follows at 7 p.m.
