Lady Chargers to host Red Devils in opener

by Tom Chillemi

Middlesex High varsity softball coach Dave Gabeler said he’s “feeling optimistic” about this year’s Lady Chargers even though the team only has four returning starters.

“We will have to replace five seniors who all produced for us last year,” said Gabeler.

Some good players will form the foundation for this year’s team, including first team All-District and first team All-Conference junior center fielder Chloe Hodges, and first team All-District and first team All-Conference sophomore slugger Lyndsay Greene.

Also returning are 2nd team All-Conference and 2nd team All-District senior catcher Rachael Howard, and 2nd team All-Conference pitching ace Kayla Paulos.

Also returning to this year’s team is senior Morgan Charnock who will start at second base, junior outfielder Lisa Oiler, and sophomores Sarah Walton at first base and Macie Daniel in the outfield.

Newcomers to this year’s varsity team include third baseman senior Zariah Freeze, junior pitcher Phoebe Walsh, junior Ashley Bowles, and sophomores Kloe Fitchett, Katie Bristow and Emma McKee.

The varsity Lady Chargers scrimmaged Lafayette on March 9, and will begin their regular season at home against Lancaster on Friday, March 17, at 4 p.m. The Lady Chargers will visit Rappahannock at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, and will visit Colonial Beach at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 23.

MHS sporting events scheduled for March 13-14 were postponed due to pending bad weather.
