On Monday, the Middlesex varsity girls basketball team jumped on Essex early and came home with a 69-46 non-district win.
The victory gave Middlesex a 3-1 overall record. Their only loss was 58-27 to James Monroe in the James Monroe Tip-Off Tournament championship game in Fredericksburg on Saturday.
An aggressive Group AA James Monroe team started quick in the title game and Middlesex was not ready, said MHS coach William Griffin. “Their guards were too fast for us,” he said. “We were in awe of them. We missed some open opportunities, we were flat, and they were going after everything.”
Middlesex was held to two field goals in the first half and trailed 31-8 at the half.
The Lady Chargers got their composure back in second half and scored 19 points.
“It’s better to get a game like this behind us early in the season,” said Griffin. “I know we will regroup and will be ready to play Group A teams.”
Micah Reed led Middlesex with 8 points. Ashae Burnett had 7, Brown 3, Katrina Reed 5, Kiersten Baylor 2, and Megan Payne 1.
Middlesex had defeated Group AA Louisa 56-55 in the first round of the tourney on Dec. 3.
The Lady Chargers led the entire game and had a 5-point lead after three quarters. However, turnovers kept Louisa in the game.
Burnett led Middlesex with 21 points, and Kimberly Ammons tallied 19. Brown added 5 points, M. Reed 4, K. Reed, Baylor and Payne had 2 each, and Whitney Walton made a free throw.
Lancaster lost to James Monroe 65-49 in the first round and defeated Louisa 53-31 in the consolation game.
