With four district victories this week, the Middlesex High varsity volleyball team improved to 6-3 in the Tidewater District and 10-7 overall.

The Lady Chargers’ final regular season game will be at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, October 24, at undefeated Mathews. A win at Mathews would tie Middlesex with West Point for second place. A loss would put Middlesex in third place.

The district tournament begins Monday, October 27, at 6 p.m. when the sixth place team (K&Q) plays at the third place finisher; and fifth seed plays at the fourth seed.

The tournament championship will be on Wednesday, October 29, at Mathews. First place Mathews will host the winner of the #4 versus #5 match at 4 p.m. Then the second seed will play the winner of the #3 versus #6 match at 5:30 p.m.

The championship game will take place 30 minutes after the second match, at about 7 p.m.

On October 16, Middlesex turned back a King William rally to hold on for a district win in four games. Visiting Middlesex won the first two games 25-21 and 25-15. King William rebounded with a 26-24 win in overtime in game three. Middlesex shut the door with a 25-22 victory in game four. The win avenges an earlier loss to the Lady Cavaliers.

“The girls had another strong match,” said coach Jennifer Harrow. “Jamie Davis had an all-around great game. She served, hit, and passed well.

“Danielle Montgomery and Ashae Burnett had some great blocks,” said Harrow, “and Kelsey Hainley’s powerful serves kept the Cavaliers at bay.”

Hainley had 15 points (8 aces), 13 digs, 11 assists and 1 double block, while Jamie Davis had 14 points (8 aces), 14 digs, 1 assist, 5 kills and 1 block for Middlesex.

Also for Middlesex, Chelsea Lewter, 4 points (1 ace), 17 digs, 2 assists, 1 kill; Hayley Guess, 2 points (1 ace), 1 dig, 4 kills, 1 solo, 1 double block; Burnett, 1 dig, 1 assist, 3 kills, 2 solo, 2 double blocks, with one ending in a point.

Other Lady Chargers adding to the win include Montgomery, 1 dig, 1 assist, 3 kills, and 3 double blocks with 2 for points; Maggie Hall, 3 digs; Raquel Pierce, 1 dig; Kelly Purcell, 2 assists, 1 kill; and Caroline Davis, 1 assist.

Harrow said she tried to get everyone into the third game “but it just didn’t pan out.”

“The girls have gotten it together,” said Harrow. “They are playing better together and trusting one another to get the ball. We still need to work a little on communication, but consistency has gotten better.”
