The Lady Chargers (2-0) won the first game 25-12, but lost game two, 25-23. Middlesex rallied with close wins of 25-23 and 25-21 to take the match.
“We didn’t have the same energy we played with against Essex [in season-opening win],” said MHS coach Jennifer Harrow. “We played to our competitors instead of playing at our own level, and that almost hurt us.”
Middlesex showed its depth as Coach Harrow used her bench strength. “The starters struggled from time to time and it was nice being able to pull someone, anyone, from the bench onto the court. And they did what was needed to keep us moving toward our win.”
Senior hitter Danielle Montgomery “was our glue that held us together,” Harrow said. “She passed, hit, and served well, especially at times when we needed it most.”
Kelsey Hainley also had a strong hitting and serving game, Harrow noted, and added that Chelsi Blake attacked well.
Ashley Figg amassed serving 22 points (7 aces), 11 assists and a kill.
Danielle Montgomery had 13 serving points (5 aces), 3 digs, 2 assists and 8 kills.
Kelsey Hainley added 8 serving points (6 aces), 3 digs, 10 assists and 7 kills.
Hayley Guess contributed 8 serving points (2 aces), a dig, 3 kills and a block.
Jamie Davis was good for 2 serving points (1 ace), 2 digs and 2 kills.
Also for the Lady Chargers, Maggie Hall had 6 digs and a kill; Megan Payne, a dig, 3 kills; Chelsea Lewter, a dig; Ashae Burnett, an ace, a kill, a block; Chelsi Blake, a point, a dig, 3 kills; Raquel Pierce, a point, a dig; and Kelly Purcell, 7 digs.
The Lady Chargers will host Rappahannock on Monday, September 8, and play at Northumberland on Tuesday, September 9, and at W&L on September 11.
Junior varsity games begin at 6 p.m. and are followed by varsity games at 7:30 p.m.
