Lady Chargers advance to semifinals of regional

by Tom Chillemi

The Middlesex High varsity girls soccer team advanced in the Region 2A Tournament by defeating Nandua 6-0 on May 25 and defeating Northampton 3-1 on May 28.

Middlesex was scheduled to host 2A Poquoson on Wednesday, May 30, in the semifinals. The winner will play either Maggie Walker or Northumberland on Friday, June 1, at a site to be determined.

The fourth-seeded Lady Chargers (13-2-1) controlled midfield against 14th seed Nandua with well-placed passes. They struck early when Brooke Daniel made a great pass to Cameron Ward who beat the defense and drove a ball to the lower right side of the goal.

Middlesex’s second goal came through “determination and a no-stop attitude” from Lily Maydole when she kept after the ball and found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead, said MHS Coach Eric Smith.

Goal three came from Ward who drove to the corner and made a drop pass to Emilie Smith who placed a shot to the far post. With this goal Smith broke her own school single-season scoring record she set last year. It was goal 33 for the year . . . but Smith wasn’t finished.

Smith got goal 34 when she sent a long ball over the top of the keeper. Ashton Carter got the assist.

Before half Middlesex had a corner kick opportunity. Payton St. Louis sent the ball to the front post and Jillian Solomon redirected the ball into the net with her knee for her first goal of the season to give Middlesex a 5-0 lead.

In the second half Middlesex continued playing hard but opportunities to score were limited by hard play from the Nandua team. “They were playing very aggressively and playing well,” said Coach Smith. “Our bench players were stepping up and playing with confidence and our defense was a solid wall on the back line.”

The defense was led by Sarah Blake and Taylor Witcher.

The Lady Chargers final goal came near the end of the game when coach Smith sent Desiree Bagby up front and Smith gave her a lead pass. Bagby beat multiple players in front of the goal and placed a precise ball in the left corner of the net.

The offense was led by Smith, Ward, and Lily Maydole.  Midfield was controlled by strong play from Brooke Daniel and Shelby Moore.
