Lady Charger harriers return top five runners
The Middlesex High School boys and girls cross-country teams will open their seasons on Thursday, September 9, against Lancaster.
“We are optimistic about our boys team and our girls team was fifth in the state last year and we have everyone returning,” said MHS coach Bill Murray.
The Lady Chargers won the Tidewater District championship last year and finished second in Region A.
The MHS girls are led by All-State and Region A champion Missy Hall, who finished sixth in the State Group A cross-country meet last year as a freshman and is expected to be among the elite runners in Region A.
Hall is joined by senior co-captains Lindsay Harrow and Stephanie Hutton, both strong and experienced runners, and juniors Rebecca Walker and Olivia Cloud. In last year’s Tidewater District meet, Hall was first and was followed, in order, by Walker, Hutton, Cloud and Harrow as the Lady Chargers swept the top five places.
The boys have juniors Kevin and John Walsh and sophomore Jeremiah Morris returning. Austin Bushong is playing football this year, but also will run with the cross-country team.
K. Walsh finished seventh in the Tidewater District meet last year, J. Walsh was 15th, Bushong 18th and Morris 19th.
New to the boys team are sophomore Shane Bristow and senior Terrance Burse. “Our goal for the boys is to at least be the district runner-up this season,” said Murray.
Middlesex’s first home meet is on September 16 against Essex, King William and New Kent.
