Most would consider a 5-run lead in the last inning a comfortable margin. Sunday afternoon, Chris King wasn’t quite comfortable enough.

The Deltaville Deltas left fielder drove a bases-loaded pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam, capping a 5 for 5 day and closing the door on the Peninsula Pirates, 13-4.

King led all hitters with 6 RBIs. However, he was not the only Deltas’ batter to shine in Williamsburg. Brett Crawford started the scoring off in the 2nd inning, driving in Matt Brown with a double. Crawford reached base 5 times on 4 hits—2 doubles and 2 singles—and scored all 5 times.

After building a 5-0 lead through 4 innings, the Pirates battled back, pulling to within 2 runs after 6 innings. However, the Deltaville bullpen buckled down, stranding 7 Pirates on base in the final 4 frames.

Josh Youngman earned the win for the Deltas in relief. Entering the game with 1 out and the Pirates threatening, Youngman struck out the next 2 batters to end the inning.

Mike Newton started for the Deltas, pitching 4 1/3 effective innings and allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 4.

Jay Moore and Ryan Wiggins combined for 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing no earned runs. Justin Ferrell closed the game, striking out 3 over the final 2 innings.

King led the offensive attack with his 2 doubles, 2 singles, and grand slam; Crawford contributed 2 doubles and 2 singles; Brown doubled and tripled; and Jimmy Denny and Luke Saunders had 2 singles each. Tim Grandy and Ryan Wiggins also singled for the Deltas.

Deltaville was rained out Friday night.

The win over the Pirates improves the Deltas to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the league.

This Saturday night, the Deltas host the league-leading, undefeated York Cannons at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Deltas travel to Denbigh High School to take on the Cannons at 4 p.m.
