Middlesex High School football and wrestling star Corey Keeling will play football at Christopher Newport University (CNU) in Newport News this fall.
A second team Tidewater District offensive guard, and defensive end/linebacker for the Chargers, Keeling will most likely be playing the position of tight end or H-back at CNU.
“I like the CNU football program, the small class sizes, and the nice campus,” said Keeling.
Keeling has a 3.3 grade point average and scored a 1020 on his college boards. “This a young man who took care of his responsibilities in the classroom and in athletics,” said Middlesex High School football coach Heath Cockerham. “We are very proud of Corey and what he has done here at Middlesex.
“CNU is not a school that’s easy to get into,” said Cockerham. “Every year, they accept 1,200 out of 12,000 applicants.”
Keeling also made his mark on the MHS wrestling mats. He was an All-State wrestler in the 215-pound division by finishing fourth in the state this year. It was the highest a Middlesex wrestler has ever finished in Group A state competition. He decisively won the Region A championship in that weight class.
Keeling is the second MHS football player to sign a letter of intent to play football next year at CNU. Scott Payne of Urbanna signed with the Captains last month.
Keeling is the son of Hope Burke of Locust Hill and Cecil Keeling of Norfolk.
