K. Walsh has All-Region performance
The Middlesex High School boys cross-country team finished seventh out of eight teams competing in the Region A meet held November 5 on the Eastern State Hospital course.
Mathews dominated the meet with 27 points. (Low score wins in cross country.)
Northumberland was second with 46 points; Lancaster, third, 93; Washington & Lee, fourth, 114; Arcadia, fifth, 131; King William, sixth, 163; Middlesex, seventh, 166; and Northampton, eighth, 173.
Mathews runner Patrick Sopko won the race in a photo finish with Northumberland runner Mischa Turner. Sopko won the race in a swift 17:30 clocking, while Turner was less than a second behind. Mathews had six runners in the top 16 places.
Charger Kevin Walsh was Middlesex’s top runner. K. Walsh finished eighth (18:12.38). Teammate John Walsh finished 30th (19:33), John Shaw was 47th (20:22), Jeremiah Morris was 48th (20:23), and Shane Bristow was 49th (20:24).
Terrance Burse ran in the race but was disqualified. MHS coach Bill Murray said Burse was caught up with the faster runners when he came out of the woods on the part of the course that repeated in the last mile.
“They carried him along and he missed the turn for the second loop around,” said Murray. “This made him finish about a half mile short. He called attention to this to the judges himself in what I think showed terrific sportsmanship.”
K. Walsh qualified to run the State Group A meet and also earned All-Region A honors.
