JV Lady Chargers return nine players

Middlesex High’s Beth Guill drives past a York defender during a November 24 junior varsity scrimmage. MHS girls basketball opens at home on Monday, December 7, against Essex.
The Middlesex High junior varsity girls basketball season gets under way on Monday, December 7, at 6 p.m. when Essex visits MHS. The JV Lady Chargers also host Lancaster on Wednesday, December 9.

Players returning from the 16-2 team of last season include Felicia Marsh, Nila Robinson, Beth Guill, Kendra Reed, Heather Blankenship, Khadijah Reed, Allison Payne, Lara Lucas, Bridgette Self and team manager Dominique Pierce.

The JV Lady Chargers have several new faces this season, including Brittin Payne, Joey Stinchcomb, Jessica Dixon, Lisa Shoaff and Brianna Dunlevy.

The MHS JVs are coached by School Resource Officer Sgt. Benny M. Burrell, a deputy with the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office. Roy Self is the assistant coach. This year’s theme will be “Back to the Basics” to build stronger players, said Burrell.

Burrell, who has been assistant JV coach for a few years, took over as head coach when Mike Lewis moved up this year to be head coach of the MHS girls varsity team.
“This season is expected to be very exciting,” said Burrell.

The JV and varsity Lady Chargers hosted York High in a scrimmage on November 24 and scrimmaged at W&L on Monday.
