The Middlesex JV softball team trailed visiting Mathews the entire game on April 25—until the bottom of the final inning.

Mathews held a 3-1 lead after two innings, then increased their lead to 5-1 in the third and 6-2 by the fourth inning.

In the fifth inning, Middlesex scored four runs to tie the game at 6-6.

However, in the sixth Mathews took advantage of Middlesex errors to score three more runs and go ahead 9-6.

The Middlesex defense stiffened in the top of the seventh, setting up a do or die situation for the JV Lady Chargers, who were down to their last three outs.

“I told the girls before we batted that this is it, this is our house and if we want to win we show it here,” said Middlesex coach Jennifer Morotini.

With one out, Kacie Moreno walked on a full count after 2 early strikes. Fiona Shaw doubled to score Moreno, cutting the Mathews lead to 9-7.

Aniyah Thompson walked and then Skye Haskiell came to the plate representing the winning run. With a full count, Haskiell hammered the ball to the right field fence for an inside-the-park home run and a 10-9 Middlesex win. “It was our best comeback of the season,” said Coach Morotini. “We were down the entire game and we never quit. I’ve never seen them fight like that and I’m so proud of their effort. They are getting better every game and it shows.”

The JV Lady Chargers are 6-4 going into the home stretch of the season.
