JV Lady Chargers are 7-1; host King William

The Middlesex High School junior varsity volleyball team is 7-1 with recent wins over Northumberland and W&L and its first loss of the season to Lancaster on Monday.

Middlesex won the first game against visiting Lancaster, 25-20, but the Devils battled back to win the match 25-20 and 15-11.

“The first loss of the season is always the hardest,”said Middlesex head coach Meredith Holt. “The loss wasn’t from lack of effort. Everyone played well and gave their all.”

Middlesex players walked on the court with their undefeated record in their heads, said Holt, while Lancaster players showed up with defeating Middlesex on their mind. A couple of close plays helped the Lady Red Devils pull out the win.

Holt said the non-district loss may serve as a motivator for the JV Lady Chargers who started Tidewater District play at West Point on September 23. “I hope the loss to Lancaster will help the ladies focus and play hard in hopes of becoming district champs.”

For the JV Lady Chargers, Ashley Williams recorded 7 points, 3 aces, 4 kills, 3 assists and 21 digs; Ivy Perkins 5 points, 1 ace, 3 kills, 25 assists, 4 digs; Bridgette Self, 5 points, 2 aces, 2 assists, 12 digs; Jessica Dixon, 4 points, 4 aces, 28 assists, 2 digs; Ally Sharpe, 3 points, 1 ace, 2 kills, 2 assists, 14 digs; Kelly Wilson, 2 points, 3 kills, 4 assists, 6 digs; Ashley Lane, 1 point, 1 ace, 9 digs; and Olivia Wilder, 1 point, 1 kill.

Visiting Middlesex swept Northumberland 25-21 and 25-13 on September 18. “Volleyball is a game that can’t be attributed to just one girl,” said Holt. “Every game takes an entire team to win. As a coach I’ve gotten lucky. I have an amazing team of athletes that work so well together.”

Ivy Perkins led the JV Lady Chargers with 11 points, 6 aces, 2 kills, 21 assists and 10 digs. Ashley Williams added 7 points, 4 aces, 3 kills and 15 digs. Bridgette Self had 8 points, 1 ace, 3 kills, 1 assist and 9 digs.

Also for the Middlesex JV team, Ally Sharpe, 4 points, 2 aces, 2 kills, 1 assist, 13 digs; Ashley Lane, 2 kills 1 assist, 6 digs; Jessica Dixon, 1 point, 1 ace, 5 kills, 14 assists, 1 dig; Olivia Wilder, 1 assist; and Kelly Wilson, 2 assists, 12 digs.

“Newcomer Kelly Wilson has shown so much improvement and is a new force to be reckoned with,” said Holt.

Middlesex swept Washington & Lee 25-20 and 25-11 on September 11. For Middlesex, Dixon had 8 points, 7 aces, 1 kill and 13 assists; Perkins, 6 points, 3 aces, 5 kills, 3 assists, 4 digs; Williams, 2 points, 1 ace 6 kills, 2 assists, 4 digs; Lane, 3 points, 3 aces, 3 kills, 1 dig; Self, 5 points, 3 aces, 1 hit, 1 assist; Sharpe, 3 points, 3 aces, 1 kill, 3 digs; Wilson, 6 digs; and Olivia Wilder, 6 digs.

On September 9 Middlesex downed Northumberland 25-16 in the first game, lost game two 25-23, and took the match with a 15-5 win in game three.

Jessica Dixon led Middlesex with 8 points, 7 aces, 1 kill, 21 assists and 1 dig. Bridgette Self added 7 points, 4 aces, 1 kill, 3 assists, 6 digs.

Also for the JV Lady Chargers, Ivy Perkins, 5 points, 3 aces, 7 kills, 7 assists and 4 digs; Ashley Williams, 4 points, 4 aces, 3 kills, 6 assists; Ally Sharpe, 2 points, 2 aces, 3 kills, 2 assists, 3 digs; Ashley Lane, 2 points, 5 kills, 9 assists, 9 digs; Kelly Wilson, 1 dig; and Joey Stinchcomb, 1 point, 1 ace.

The Lady Charger volleyball teams will host district foe King William on Tuesday, September 30, and are at King and Queen on October 2 for another district match. JV games are at 6 p.m. and are followed by varsity games at 7:30 p.m.
