Indians rally past Chargers

Northumberland rallied in the final minutes Friday night in Heathsville and pinned a 14-8 non-district varsity football loss on Middlesex.

The Indians scored a first quarter touchdown to grab a 6-0 lead.

Middlesex took the lead with 11:47 to play in the fourth quarter on a 5-play, 15-yard drive following a fumble recovery. Avery Bundy scored the touchdown for MHS on a one-yard run and Craig Conley added the 2-point conversion for an 8-6 Charger lead.

With time winding down in the game, the Indians recovered a Middlesex fumble on the Charger 24 yard line. The MHS defense drove the Indians back with two sacks, but a 38-yard, third down pass play gave NHS a first down on the Charger two yard line. The Indians scored the go-ahead touchdown on a two-yard run with only 1:38 remaining in the game.

The Chargers (1-1) are idle this week and will host Franklin at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 25, in their home opener.
