Five members of the Middlesex High School wrestling team have qualified for the State 1A wrestling championships set for February 16-18 at the Salem Civic Center in Salem.

The five Chargers qualified for the state meet at last weekend’s Region 1A East championships at Riverheads High School in Staunton.

In the 160-pound weight class, Andres Rowe was the only Charger to win a Region 1A East individual championship. A senior at MHS, Rowe has a 26-4 record this season. This is the third year in a row that Rowe has qualified for the state meet. He medaled in 2015 with a fifth place finish, and finished sixth in 2016. During those years he competed in the 170-pound weight class.

“We are very proud of Andres,” said MHS head coach Joel Anderson. “Andres is a senior and he has come through the program. He has demonstrated that he is one of the top wrestlers in his weight class.”

Middlesex’s Derron Cooke and Jack Ruark finished second in their weight classes at the regional meet to earn a spot in the state meet. Cooke competed in the 113-pound weight class and has a 12-5 record this season. Ruark qualified in the 126-pound class and has a 27-7 record for the season.

Noah Cannon and Manny Fernandez finished fourth in their weight classes. Cannon qualified for state in the 106-pound class and has a 18-13 record for the season, while Fernandez qualified in the 145-pound class and has a 27-6 record on the year.

Those who are alternates for the state meet are Cameron Morgan, Jonas Urban and Dylan Wells, who all finished fifth in their weight classes. Morgan is in the 120-pound class, Urban is in the 132-pound class, and Wells is in the 170-pound class.

The only other Charger to place in the Region 1A meet was Caleb Bagley, who finished sixth in the 138-pound class.

Caleb Davis of Northumberland was named “Wrestler of the Tournament.” He competed in the 152-pound class.

Scott Swatts of Riverheads was named “Coach of the Tournament.”
